How much data does surfing the internet/emailing consumer?
« on: August 02, 2014, 10:10:52 AM »

I was wondering if anyone here has one of those limited plans like 500mb/month. I looked at freedompop and they offer 500mb a month. I mostly do my emails from home, browse the web (blogs) and look up addresses/locations on google maps. Could I do that with a 500mb/month? I could get rid of my $50/mo internet plan.

I could alternatively use my Ting as a hotspot but it's $12 to use 100-500mb/mo.

I think you can do it, but you'll need to be zealous with image/ad/script blocking, since those things use a ton of bandwidth. Google maps might put you over, depending on how you use it. Blogs are great if limited to mostly text. IIRC freedompop is something like 400mb before they try to re-up your card, and I've heard of some other super shady ish from them, but you'll probably be ok if you can use a virtual CC and monitor your use actively.

Check out this thread:

I just did it in July after my provider kicked the monthly fee from $40 to $60.

Rebs uses it without any issues. I use it now without any issues, and I pay $19/month.

The link at the top is a referral link from that guy which I used. You both get some free data if you sign up through that. I don't have a referral link, but it doesn't look like I'll need the extra data anyway.

I have 500 MB a month with my T-Mobile plan, haven't exceeded it yet and I use it for both my work and home email accounts and a few non-greedy apps. The way I manage that is to not automatically download attachments, and I don't really use my phone to surf the net much at all.

If I were surfing the Internet much, I could see getting to 500 MB pretty fast.

Kids and I watch too much YouTube for that to work. 500 MB is like 0:30 of video content. We don't watch much, but certainly more than half an hour per month.

On the other hand, for just  email, shopping, and social networks? I could probably do that, especially if you use the mobile optimized sites.
