i should sell my "fun" car, right?
« on: June 01, 2014, 07:41:54 AM »
I have a sensible hybrid car, and my wife has a sensible family car.  Last year, on a whim, I purchased a "fun" used car.  It is a convertible.  I drive it only in the summer, and last year put on 2000 miles.
I want your support in selling it (meaning querying if it makes sense.  I would lose only a little $, since i bought it used), even though it is fun and I enjoy it.  I am on track for retirement whether I sell it or not, but it seems like it is an unnecessary luxury.  At some point, we have to say some luxuries are acceptable (for me, my smartphone) and some aren't I suppose.  This is my biggest indulgence.

Yes, sell it. There are lots of financial reasons for doing so, so I'll give you the car safety reason: you will be crushed if it ever rolls over!

I support you in your choice to sell it.  Sounds like you got some fun out of it and are ready to part with it.

Why don't you drive it one more summer and then sell it?

"You want our support in selling it"?  Does this mean that you want to be able to put the responsibility on us?

You have a track for FI/RE which the car does not disrupt.  I'm assuming that you also have garaging and appropriate mechanical abilities/help.  So you don't need to sell it, just make the choice as to whether to keep it or sell it.  It's OK to say to yourself "I wanted it, I've enjoyed it, I no longer get the same enjoyment out of it and want to pass it on to someone else who will get more fun out of it".  The only question I would ask is: what will replace the fun it gives you?  Mustachianism is not just about saving money, it is also about having a life that makes you happy.

How many convertibles do you see roll? They have a much lower centre of gravity than SUVs and 4WDs.

How much does insurance and registration cost you for the car each year?

I'd say to sell it. I find that two cars is already enough. Without going into an endless debate, our car-centric culture is the root of many social, economic and environmental impacts that need no demonstration. I used to be deep into vintage sports cars and motorcycles, and I admit that I still shiver at the sight of a vintage Porsche or Norton, but I also admit that putting "car" and "fun" in the same sentence is absurd. Even if I can now afford the cars and motorcycles I used to dream of when I was a pennyless youth, I chose more environmentally-responsible alternatives for transportation and fun.
