Title: How Many of You Are There?
Post by: pecunia on March 27, 2018, 07:04:46 PM
As I'm learning about this FI stuff, I learn there are a lot of people creating the content to help the rest of us to get where we want to be.

There is J L Collins, The Mad FIentist. Choose FI, etc.  Just how many people are in this movement?  Is it growing?  What percent of working people follow the philosophies expounded in these blogs and podcasts?

Is there a reaction to this movement from major marketers or do those who follow frugality even a blip on their radar?  Will they shame us into conformity?

I, for one, wish I had known about some of this many years ago.

The reddit FI page (aka the most mainstream group) has just shy of 400k subscribers. If we estimate that 75% of that group are English speaking Americans and that it represents just 10% of national interest in the topic. Now you have 3M people (400k x .75 x 10).

Unfortunately, 3M is just 2% of an estimated ~150M working Americans.

Obviously, this is very back-of-the-envelope and you can reach any figure from 5% to .2 % by varying your assumptions. However, any way you slice it, FI adherents are still in the low single digits. Certainly not enough to upset any marketing plans.

That's still pretty significant.  I would not have guessed it was anywhere near that high.

I was very generous with my estimates. 3M is more of an optimistic upper bound than anything else. suspect that the real number* is closer to 1M.

*Depending on how you want to define a "real" FI adherent vs. a filthy casual.

This website got 2.7M pageviews from 390k unique visitors (https://www.seethestats.com/site/mrmoneymustache.com) in the last month. I'd say 1-3M US mustachians is a reasonable estimate.
