I know very little about bikes. My Mustachian transport changes have thus far been entirely switching to walking and downgrading from a minivan to a Prius. Time to tackle the bike for medium distances:

I currently have a very heavy framed Schwinn cruiser bike without gears from 8 years ago that is in great condition. I was thinking to sell it on Craigslist and use the cash for a lightweight bike that would be less taxing to ride so I can take it further.

We do have a local bike shop that operates on donations to pick frames, wheels etc and you can build your own bike for a low cost. What should I look for in a bike? Most of my riding would be in town and lightly hilly with the occasional possible trail thrown in while camping unless it isn't advisable. Do you have to have a separate bike for trails? You don't, right? I don't even know!
What about gears for hills? Should I look for a bike with them?

Thanks for any insight and education!

Hi thegeebees- I have been researching a similar topic (kinda), and came across this blog post, perhaps it may help you?

It's part of a series, and maybe you could contact the blogger?

If the local shop operates on donations, and is a non-profit, that's probably your answer right there!

If you're really interested in cycling, these places are pretty much gold mines for people with little knowledge and little $$$, or any combination thereof.  They also tend to attract people who just love cycling. I knew a bit about cycling before finding one (Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles in my case).  I volunteered for a while, did a build-a-bike course, volunteered some more, and then I was hooked.

Talk to the director/coordinator, and let them know you are interested not only in cycling, but also learning about bikes.  Also see if they have a repair class or series you can join.

As for a bike, I would recommend a hybrid.  It's basically an upright road bike- faster than a mountain bike, but more comfortable (and less intimidating) than a road bike.  You're looking for something that fits the terrain you are looking to ride.  You will need gears, and you will get used to using them.

Once you've met some of the local cycling community, you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn.

I don't know too much but  definitely recommend shock absorption and determine what type of terrain you will be going on for tire width. I got a used bike from a bike store near me. They didn't advertise that they had a used bike warehouse but they did! Got a great bike for half price!

I also invested in a seat cushion and very glad I did that :)
