How do you ask for a raise?

I've been working in my current position for a little over a year now.  I was hired right out of law school as an attorney and missed out on annual reviews because I was there for less than 6 months at the time they were conducted.  I was thinking of just asking for a review, do you think that's a good way of hinting I want a raise?

First do some investigating. Find out approximately what others of similar experience and skills make. Determine when the firm typically offers raises and what criteria they use.  If your pay is low compared to your peers, you meet seniority, and you're meeting or exceeding expectations set a meeting with the boss.  Then lay the facts on the table and politely ask for a raise.  During a review is as good a time as any but it's worth the wait to see if their view of your performance matches your own first. It might save you some embarrassment or set the conditions for success.

Get a job offer from another employer. Tell your boss you are considering it and ask if they want to put in a competing offer with 48 hours to have you stay.

Worst that could happen is that your boss says no. You would be in the same exact place, except, if you are a quality employee, they will know that the money better improve eventually or you will leave. Just do not be bitter and angry if the answer is no. Remember, this is be business. Be professional.

Just ask, more than likely the response will be some BS that raises are only given during the annual compensation review.
