How do working Mustachians spend the weekend?
« on: February 23, 2013, 06:25:24 PM »
Just curious.  How do working Mustachians spend the weekend?  Particularly ones without families.

I have become much more of a homebody in recent years.  Today I did a little housework, a lot of TV and stayed in my bathrobe the entire time.

Let's see... I worked on some home made wine, bought a used dining table on craigslist and worked on rebuilding my master cylinder on my car.

I lazed about most of the time, but then had a flurry of cooking and baking activity this evening. I have now resumed lazing about.

I'm drooling over a house listing in the area that we plan to move to in a year or so, and dreaming about being able to move now. The house was built in 1834, so it's practically new compared to our current house (1830). :D

I usually go for a hike/bike ride when the weather's nice and work out indoors when it's not.  I also go to the library if I need new books and spend some time reading at home.  Today I slept in, worked on a grad school project for several hours, built a fire, made some chicken tacos.

Personally, I got drunk with some coworkers on Friday afternoon (don't judge)/night.  Saturday I had a great deadlift workout at the gym, looked at craigslist cars for sale, looked at propertires is the next city I want to live in, and played some chess.

Normally gardening, reading, quilting, beach walks, socialising with friends at our/their houses. Simple relaxing cheap things that I happen to enjoy very much.

However, I was advised Wednesday just gone that my position was being made redundant in a restructure that no-one saw coming, and no redundancy payout to come, so this weekend was spent submitting my cv for anything even remotely likely, drinking too much alcohol and feeling sorry for myself (facepunch me, I dare you at this point in time lol) and trying not to think about my chances of getting an almost ideal job I wangled an interview for the day after we got the bad news. One of those word of mouth things that just happened to crop up. I thought it went well, but wont hear the results for another 10 days though.

Even though I'm fairly new to MMM I'm confident the things I am learning on here will greatly assist us in getting through this. Fortunately my husband still has a job. Although our income will take a huge hit we had already implemented a lot of savings ideas and I know we can still improve on this...  (Hopefully by next weekend I will have chilled out a little/lot and be back to normal weekend stuff.)

Well, half the time I spend it working. That just makes retirement that much more alluring.

The rest of the time, I laze about, read books and watch TV, try to educate myself as much as possible about my finances, try to improve skills (I sing and am trying to learn some very basic DIY stuff), plan groceries and cook for the week, tidy up the place, and spend time with my friends and family.

From your post, I wonder if you are concerned about being too much of a homebody in retirement?  I think that when I am not constantly being stressed out by a job, the thought of tackling new interests and activities will be much less daunting.  I fully expect my horizons to broaden when I am not limiting them with so much work.

Normally, we go on long walks, run errands, read, make crazy elaborate meals, see friends, and, of course, catch up on Internet bizness. ;) But I got my wisdom tooth yanked yesterday, so this weekend it's been whining, drinking broth, and watching David Attenborough documentaries until I fall asleep. But mostly whining.

Saturday-Woke up, practiced guitar for an hour. Repaired a running toilet at our rental property (they're tough to catch!) and mowed the lawn at the rental and our property. Had a walking date with Mrs. PoP, 20$ at a restraunt that we never would have visited if not on foot.

Sunday-Woke up, start day at local cafe (we're under budget for restaurant this month, so no guilt). Listen to old retirees debate occam's razor. Repair/maintain lawn mower, spend time with father when he comes into town this afternoon. Will write "shareholder letter" for blog later tonight that should put a cap on a very good 2012.

Not sure i'd categorize this weekend as mustachian, but it was enjoyable.

Best,
Mr. PoP

Normally the weekend is when I do the grocery shopping, cook breakfast & lunch meals to take to work, and do the laundry. When done with chores I allow myself to goof off and read. Housecleaning gets done when needed. Dogs get walked in good weather.

This weekend I'm on call, so spent a few hours at work on Saturday, and will be going in again in a few hours. Cooking is mostly done, still have laundry to go.

Normally I work Saturdays - at least the morning. I go to the "marché" for fresh fruit/vegetables at the end of the morning.

Afternoon - garden, food shopping for week, hike with husband or just myself - or a kid if I can convince one to come. Am at my in-laws' today - and it feels great to just play on this forum this afternoon - it's COLD out!

This weekend I did a bunch of baking - bread, burrito wraps, cupcakes - some sewing and straightening up my sewing room, tried to sell my car, and spent the rest of the time doing homework (almost have my MBA!) and volunteering at the community theater.  The theater is my husband's obsession, and I love watching shows and helping out behind the scenes in all sorts of ways, would love to have more time for this!

Friday night I had some friends over for some drinks. We decided to not go out on the town and save some money and sit around and have some laughs. I find this happening more often, as some of my friends are starting to realize they need to get their financial house in order.

Saturday I got a haircut, and generally lazed about playing video games, one of my largest time sinks and vices. Also caught up on some shows (I torrent the day-of releases, and Netflix ones that I'm not following closely).

Today I'm going to the gym, gonna tidy up a bit, and relax some more mentally preparing myself for another week of work (I don't hate my job, but I don't love it either, so I'm still being aggressive toward ER)

I've spent most of this weekend creating marketing materials for my husband's business.  He has carved out a niche for himself and loves what he does--he would do it if he weren't getting paid for it (and has), so when we reach FI, he'll continue to do it.  It will definitely make our financial goals easier to attain, and as a plus, he'll probably be able to set up travel jobs, so we can travel in the future.

I want to support him and he's needed marketing materials for a while.  I'm finding that I enjoy design work, so it's a win-win :).  I've had fun working on it this weekend.  I've also done some cooking and hanging out with the family.

Laundry, grocery shopping (have just switched to every two weeks, and it's wonderful) and house building. Hoping to be able to take that last off the list in about a month.

Saturday: sleeeeep, put together my weekly radio show, broadcast said radio show, hang out with one of my other various groups of friends
Sunday: bunch of rando things. update events calendar, exercise, work on various music projects, catch up on MMM, cook some stuff, maybe hang out with a couple more people, etc.

I work for myself, so weekends tend to be much like other days.  This time of year, it's 3/4 hours on the computer in the AM, work outside/ski/hike/bike in the PM, do another few hours of work in the evening.

Cook all my meals for the coming week
Do laundry
Go for walks
Play frisbee, go hiking, etc
Play board games
Watch movies from the library
Read books

I used to go to the movies, go to bars, out to shows, but I don't do most of those things anymore unless there is something special I'm really interested in (once every few months instead of every weekend).

I took it easy this weekend.  After working a full week despite apparently having had the pig/cow/horse/bird death flu last weekend, I was wiped out by Friday night.  Slept 11 hours that night.  Just played some video games Saturday and did some cleaning up around the house (found some things to dispose of in my continuing pursuit of minimalism -- at least as minimalist as someone with way too many complicated/expensive hobbies can be!).  Decided a couple of those old games can go in the trash (tried to trade them in last year but the local buyback place wouldn't take them).  Watched a DVD (original version of "Flight of the Phoenix"), which we can now sell/get rid of.

Slept another 11 hours that night.  Played some more video games (oddly, it'd been months since I'd done that, but after years of being way behind on everything, I'm finally getting caught up enough to just do whatever with my time!).  Even had enough time to drag out my old TI MSP430 microcontroller dev kit and fiddle with it some.  Soldered on some headers to make it easier to work with.  Did some laundry too.  Also found some bubbled paint on the car that I scraped off, surprisingly found NO rust underneath, so coated with touchup paint until I can arrange to get the whole car painted (which it's been needing for a couple years as it's a 1990 build date and is starting to fade down to primer).

So, all in all a very relaxed "no work" weekend this time around...  Having less stuff to maintain these days saves me a LOT of time on the weekends!

Generally I spend my Saturdays running errands (thrift shop to hunt for books, grocery store for the week, any others that might need doing) and cleaning the house, while Sundays are spent working on embroidery projects, catching up on bad TV, doing laundry, and prepping lunch foods for the week (like a big pot of soup or lentils). I was out of town this weekend on a stitching retreat, though, and got back home a few hours ago, so I'm off to throw in some laundry and put on the hockey game.

I don't usually tend to want to go out on the weekends and would much rather just stay home. My mom calls a weekend day where you don't have to get into the car a "perfect day," and a day where you don't leave the house a "super perfect day." My own super perfect day would probably include taking the dog for a walk, but not leaving the house for any other reason.

Being newer to the Mustachian ways, I have found I enjoy just being home on the weekends when we used to drive all over running errands. The weekends are generally spent catching up on all the things we can't do during the week, laundry, cooking, cleaning and yard work.

This weekend we attended the grand opening of a new library in our neighborhood (good news for local Mustachians), walked to the grocery store and got a bike trailer off freecycle.

Like others on the thread, I use weekends to get myself prepared for the coming week: grocery shopping, preparing lunches, doing laundry, etc... I also do my longer endurance exercises on the weekend.

This weekend I tried something new and found a group on meetup.com playing pickup games of Ultimate frisbee. Turned out to be a fun, free way to spend the afternoon (although I'm a bit sore now and may be even sorer tomorrow!)

Finally, I have to admit that on both Saturdays and Sundays I indulge in my ultra-luxurious, non-Mustachian habit of going to the coffee shop and catching up on my reading. At some point I may see the light and dump the habit, but for now I enjoy the atmosphere and it fits within my budget.

So nice to see how people spend their free time :)

Husband is away for work, so I had a weekend to myself. On Saturday I did some laundry and vacuuming, visited my mid-renovation home, had coffee with mum and sis, took a knitting class, and had coffee/dinner with my best friend. Not a very Mustashian day! On Sunday I stayed home all day knitting and watching Pride and Prejudice on DVD (all 6 hours of the BBC version). LOVED it.

Other weekends we might be sourcing things for our renovation, making furniture, cooking, gardening, quilting, reading library books, doing uni work, doing a lot more cleaning, walking or running around our neighbourhood, or having a picnic in a local park.

Ooh, interesting question!

This working mustachian was extremely excited to have two days off in a row.  Saturday was an unusually consumerist day.  The spouse keeps getting Chili's gift cards from his mother even though he keeps explaining that there are no Chili's in nyc.  So we made a day of it and invited friends to join us in NJ where there is a Chili's right near the PATH train!  We also stopped at the nearby mall.  I guess I am easily pleased but for some reason taking a trip out of town, even if it's just on the PATH train, and doing something unusual like going to a mall, is something I can mentally turn into like the Grand freaking Tour.  I didn't buy anything at the mall, btw.  Then I met up with some other friends at Contradancing, which is 15 bucks but well worth it.

Today I finished up the David McDonagh biography of Truman and took a nap.

I'm increasingly finding myself staying at home for weekends. I stay in a part of the city with nothing around to do/go to. Even if you do travel (I hate driving) to the other part of the city, you'll find expensive malls, multiplexes and other shitty places always trying to sell you something (and rob you in the process).

So I'm usually experimenting with a new dish, or cleaning up the house, running errands, and general maintenance on my motorcycle (my daily ride to office). I also go for leisure cycling and relax with a movie on the computer.

I try to give myself one day to goof of on the weekend, and one day to get things done. Even on the goof-off day I generally get some housework done, and some reading and sometimes some writing too.

This weekend was unusual because I have been suffering from dizzy spells for the last week and couldn't take it anymore as of Saturday, so I went to the urgent care place. Got some meds to clear the fluid out of my ears and dozed/napped/watched The West Wing on Netflix all day.

Sunday I was feeling better so I met my bestie and her new boyfriend for lunch, then drove out to the rehab facility to see my grandma who is there recovering from a broken hip. She was sleepy and napped a lot, and I got really tired all of a sudden, so I came home and rested a bit, too. Then we talked to my husband's folks in Scotland over Skype and he roasted us a chicken and we ate it and went to bed.

Next weekend I think I will have more fun stuff to do. Some friends and I are starting a writing group, and my piece is among the first we are going to workshop. Exciting!

usually a few drinks one evening and a film the other. food shopping, a walk, reading, baking, learning to cook a new meal. planning and dreaming about travel and the future in general. church on sunday. house-stuff, washing/cleaning/tidying. generally taking it easy and not trying to get too much done.

This weekend I:

...played some racquetball,
...skinned a skunk,
...worked on some renovations around the house,
...attended a local college hockey game,
...had friends over my house one evening,
...went to a friends place the next evening,
...did some baking with friends,
...did some reading scattered throughout.

I do need to confess, it is easier for me to do things outside the house at a limited expense. I work at a college that's under 2 miles from my house. That grants me use to all of their facilities (racquetball courts, pool, gym, etc.) and gets me into their events at no cost. If they paid for my meals I could retire, er uh, that wouldn't quite work...

This weekend:  I have the flu, so I have been doing absolutely nothing:  watching Netflix, surfing the net, etc.

Usually:  I spend one day conquering housework, grading, and homework, and then one day working on hobbies, relaxing, etc.

I'm serious about my mustachianism; not particularly serious about anything else.  I consider each weekend a mini-preview of what it might be like to be retired.

Therefore, I spent the bulk of my weekend playing World of Warcraft.  I raised a new character to level 24, which was fun because all the low-level content has changed since I last tried the areas.  Don't judge me!  :)  It's cheaper than crack (though more addictive).

I slept in as long as I felt like sleeping both days; it was decadent and lovely.

We ran some errands we can't do during the week - a Costco trip, some banking.  My room mate went to see her tax guy, and we had an architect over to give us opinions on our upcoming kitchen remodel.  (Which isn't particularly mustachian, but she's in far better financial shape than I am, and can afford it without damaging or slowing her retirement prospects.)

We did some cooking for the week ahead, which is always a big deal on our winter weekends - each of us takes a day and does some slow-cooking or dutch-oven cooking.  During summer, we don't do much indoor cooking at all, which gives us more time for goofing off.

We watched a lot of HGTV (see above re: kitchen remodel) and quite a few episodes of Inspector Lewis, played around online, fretted desperately about the snow, and did household chores and stuff.

I spend the weekend working some more...and studying

World of Warcraft was great while it lasted, until I decided I couldn't waste $15/mth on it any more when I only have the time to play for a few hours a month.

Most weekends I spend climbing and camping out at the Red River Gorge, which typically involves packing and getting all my meals ready for the weekend on Friday night, leaving Saturday and getting back Sunday night.  However, since it's still pretty cold out and the pizza shop/campground is still closed I usually only manage one day climbing.  Then the other day is spent in some combination of watching movies/tv, listening to music, cooking, daydreaming about FI, board games with my roommate, and reading.

Spent the weekend doing stuff around the house (laundry, cleaning, rearranging some things), having dinner at a friends house, napping with my kiddo, bought some cardstock at Michaels and picking up another baby chick. We're expanding our flock this year (hooray for selling eggs) and I'm picking and choosing the breeds. My son is naming the new babies, so far we have John Deere, Chicky Chicky Chook Chook and now Logan the Loud. My kid cracks me up.

What I've found interesting is that we all seem to kind of do similar things - hanging out, pottering around the house types of things.

Not to derail further, but I'm curious: are you eating the skunk? Or is it about the fur? If eating, what do you cook with it? If fur, why? Forgive my ignorant questions, it is not something I have ever done on a weekend.

Lots of these activities sound really familiar.

Friday we had some friends over; I cooked dinner (deep dish pizza) and a pecan pie for dessert. Our friends hooked us up with a shopping bag full of savory and sweet baked goods (one works at a bakery), which helps defray the food budget this week. Then we all played improvisational and other music for an hour or two and watched the latest James Bond movie on the projector.

Saturday I brewed a 5 gallon all-grain batch of mostly organic pilsner, read a sci-fi book, bleached our basement tub to prepare it for use in soaking logs to sprout mushrooms, took measurements of my partner's bicycle to order a replacement for her malfunctioning rear hub, and then we biked to a joint birthday party at a friend's place (gifts were homebrewed cider for the cider lover and a 6 year old homebrewed mead for the homebrewer).

Sunday morning I compiled amended 2012 tax returns (oversight due in part to late document prep from Schwab). Then we biked over to another friend's place for brunch (our contribution was eggs from my Mom's farm), where I learned all about constructing Nerf guns out of PVC and also how to accelerate a ping-pong ball to supersonic speeds using a vacuum pump and PVC tubing. After that I spent several hours fixing my Mom's computer up while my partner worked on year-end accounting for our bike club. Then I made dinner and we finished the weekend up by watching a dumb but funny movie.

All-in-all a pretty good weekend and fairly typical. These kinds of days keep me motivated to stay on track for early retirement; work just gets in the way of doing more interesting things.

This weekend I:
...skinned a skunk,

Another Upstate New York reader here too!  I saw the, "skinned a skunk" and thought it sounds like a pretty regular activity for around here and then looked at your location, and sure enough, Upstate New York.

Not to derail further, but I'm curious: are you eating the skunk? Or is it about the fur? If eating, what do you cook with it? If fur, why? Forgive my ignorant questions, it is not something I have ever done on a weekend.

I am not originally from Upstate New York either, but many of the folks in my neck of the woods are avid hunters coupled with many in the region being quite frugal out of habit or necessity.  We have a neighbor who has recollected times where his family had skinned and ate squirrels.  There was a time not long ago that many families in my region raised a pig to be butchered in the fall for winter eating.  The region is economically depressed and has been so for a good deal of time from my understanding.

I am not sure what the original poster's intentions were for the skunk, but around these parts I don't bat an eye to any wild animal being fair game for hunting, consumption, etc.

I have learned a lot living here.  They are inventive and resourceful people and I hope to glean as much as I can.  Living off the land is alive and thriving here.

Hmmmm... great question.  This weekend I:

  • took my daughter to a birthday party (yes, re-gifted Christmas present - is that bad?).
  • worked on a truck I'm flipping.
  • went through the attic and identified stuff for a garage sale
  • cleaned
  • flew a kite in a park with two little girls (pure magic)
  • worked in my garden trying to get it prepped for planting

Typically spend it doing some of the following:

- walking to the library and making a return errand trip for fresh produce and groceries,
- studying up on home repairs (the library and youtube is your friend),
- property management for a condo,
- hiking, walking, and generally making home improvements,
- reading borrowed books,
- watching a long awaited movie,
- cleaning house and car top-to-bottom,
- visiting family and friends,
- studying investments to rebalance portfolios,
- cooking for the rest of the week.

There was a time not long ago that many families in my region raised a pig to be butchered in the fall for winter eating.

There was a time not long ago that I sent a pig to be butchered (raised at my sis-in-law's house).  That time was about a week ago.

I did some batch cooking for the week, had a family birthday dinner, and went out social dancing (which is relatively Mustachian, as dances are are often free or can be gotten that way by volunteering a bit).

Great!  I am envious - nice to know where your food comes from.

Cool! Haven't really seen too large of a presence of upstaters here. How far upstate are ya? You can PM me as to not get too off topic here. And btw, I love squirrel! I make killer squirrel "wings".

Not to derail further, but I'm curious: are you eating the skunk? Or is it about the fur? If eating, what do you cook with it? If fur, why? Forgive my ignorant questions, it is not something I have ever done on a weekend.

I suppose it warrants an explanation (and I hope not to derail too much). I would've eaten the skunk but it wasn't fresh when I got it. I actually noticed it as roadkill that was less than a day old. I picked it up for two reasons. The fur looked really nice on this guy. He was of decent size so I figured I can make a nice hat out of it after I tan the hide. The second, not so legal reason, is for the purpose of coyote hunting. Coyotes eat damn near anything and my buddy has a coyote problem on his land. The carcass will be used as bait when he hunts them this week. You might think, coyote problem = no need for bait but that's not always the case with predator hunting. They're crafty and have really keen senses. Having bait makes it much easier.

For fun, here's a picture of the skinned skunk (and coincidentally, my buddy in the background(the camera focused on him)). Obviously, it's not for the squeamish. http://i.imgur.com/2OTpdy5.jpg

Spork, if you know where the scent glands are and make it a point to be careful/stay away they're really not too offensive. It's very mild and your nose gets used to it fairly quick.

Another pretty quiet weekend here. We did all the regular weekend things that everyone else seems to do: laundry, meal planning for the week, house cleaning, baking, cooking, grocery shopping, etc. We did also tackle a small organizational project. We still had boxes of clothes in our closet from our move to the house almost 3 years ago, so both my husband and I went through all of our clothes and sorted out a bunch to donate (3 big garbage bags worth). It was great to find some old favorites that had never been unpacked :) (almost like shopping, but free!). We then reorganized our closet, and thoroughly cleaned the closet and our bedroom. It feels so nice to be in that space now.
