Get Me Into Telecom for Intercontinental Travel
« on: July 13, 2014, 05:34:04 AM »
Hey so I realize this is somewhat late to be figuring this stuff out, but I'm going to Europe in two weeks. I'd be fine without a cell phone, but my travel buddy wants one so that's that. I cold think of two options:

Whatever cell phone magic can be done to make my/her/our phone(s) work over there
Buy a cheap prepaid disposable phone upon arrival

Pros/cons of each? Anything I'm not thinking of? I have a 4 year old "feature" phone, she has a pretty new smart phone if that matters at all.

Thanks for the help!

1. Call your carrier before you leave and get them to unlock your phone for international travel
2. Get a prepaid sim for ten pounds when you get here and then throw it away at the end of the trip.

Is there a similar option for CDMA phones w/o a sim card?

Looks like US, Japan, South Korea and the caribbean only for CDMA. Burner phone it is then?

A new-ish smartphone should be CDMA/GSM compatible.

I have a Galaxy S3 on Verizon in the US which I used while traveling abroad that is compatible (it's a work cell, but it gets onto the international networks just fine).
