Hi everyone,

My boyfriend has been traveling on a post-undergrad fellowship for the last year. This fellowship forbids him from entering the United States for a full 365 days, so his earliest return date is August 7th.

He has about $2000 cash and $30,000 in a Roth IRA (which he does not want to touch). Because he has no other liquid savings, he urgently wants to find a job. Since he's relocating to Los Angeles to be closer to me (his family is from Seattle), I'm trying to help him in this process.

His background is in Music Composition, working with electronics. He has retail, custodial experience, and has about 2 -3 years experience working in a library. He's also worked in Admissions while in college.

Since he doesn't have "obvious" skills like engineering, his thought is to apply for higher ed jobs, working as a resident hall director, or working in study abroad offices, with all his experiences in travel as a student. He's a great writer, communicates well, and has good references.

He wants to take additional classes at a university to prepare for a Master's, so some schools give discounts to employees. I'm thinking that schools may hire in the summer for fall/spring positions.

Anyone have tips for someone who isn't available to interview locally? What is the timeline to start applying if you know your relocation date (he isn't expecting companies to help with that process, and at worst could always live with me for awhile)?

Any thoughts on other jobs he could apply for with his skill set?

When applying say in the cover letter that he is arriving on such and such date.

I'm not a creative type, but I did this, but primarily through a headhunter.

I started searching one month before returning and set up phone interviews for the first couple days back in America.  However, he could easily manage phone and Skype interviews from abroad, getting an earlier start.

What is his intended master's going to be in? I would think with his background and the fact you live in LA, if he could get training in sound engineering or whatever it's called, he could make a career working in the music industry and/or the film industry.
