Hotspot Options for 6-month road/travel/camping trip?

I'm planning on a 6-month trip starting in January.  Been a dumbphone user my whole life; I have no access to a data plan.  So, I'm looking for a mustachian hotspot device and a cheap data plan, preferably based on usage.

I'd like to avoid Freedom Pop.

Ting has a Sierra Hotspot device for about $63 and their data is about $25 per 1gb.
Karma Go has device for $100 (pre-order) and their data is about $14 per 1gb.

Any other cheap options out there?

I don't think this is cheap but we used a Verizon hotspot called Jetpack.  It was around $75-80 and the levels of data were (I'm trying to remember), $15 for one week of less then 1gb, $60 for 2gb, $90 for 4gb for one month.  We didn't really use that much data but at the time we needed the max because we weren't sure where we would be on our road trip (campground, motel or hotel).  And my husband needed to have good internet to work on the road.  Look up the Verizon plans for a more accurate cost then my memory, this was a pay as you go kind of thing.  Verizon was way better then when I tried a T-Mobile one two years before. We thought the higher price was worth it and it was absolutely,no regrets.  Our trip was all over the USA and Canada over two months.

Why not Republic Wireless? $150 Moto X, $25 a month for unlimited data on their 3G network. No contract, you can turn off 3G when you get back and have unlimited call and text for just $10/month.

Actually they have a new phone coming out thats just $99.

EDIT: Oh, by hotspot do you mean you want to access wifi from your phone to your computer? if thats the case, Republic doesnt do that. sorry.

How come?  Free 1GB (on 4g, or $4/mo for 3G/4G) is pretty hard to beat, so I'm curious as to your reason on this.

(I'll admit, I'm very biased towards FP, and use multiple of their products.)
