Honda Civic - issue with smoke
« on: September 22, 2015, 04:11:58 PM »
Yesterday I was coming home when about 4-5 miles from my house, there was  white smoke coming from behind the steering wheel. It didnt look like a cloud of smoke but much more like a stream lined smoke as the cigarettes smoke do at the beginning of the tip or incense sticks i guess.

Immediately I stopped the car and called assistance ... looked at the hood and did not see smoke or anything that looks out of the engine.

Also, my OBD device did not identify anything unusual in the metrics.

When I got home I researched on Google, and what I saw on Google, there is a recall at the level of the headlights and reads as follows:

SUMMARY:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE LOW-BEAM TERMINAL ON THE HEAD LIGHT WIRE HARNESS CAN OVERHEAT AND COULD CAUSE THE LOW BEAMS TO FAIL WITHOUT WARNING.

SAFETY RISK:
AN UNEXPECTED LOSS OF LOW BEAMS COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

REMEDY:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE HEAD LIGHT SWITCH AND COUPLER FOR SIGNS OF HEAT DAMAGE. IF HEAT DAMAGE IS PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE SWITCH AND COUPLER. IF NO HEAT DAMAGE IS PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE HEAD LIGHT SWITCH AND ONE IN THE MATING PIN COUPLER.

What I saw online, many other people who complained of the same problem as me, went to Honda and the origination of the problem was indeed something regarding this.

Now I ask ... the Honda dealership closer to me, is 20 miles ... will be safe to drive there you think during the day? I've watched others report that this problem is mostly when the lights are on and in fact yesterday when this happened I had the lights on (it was quite cloudy in late afternoon already) ...

I ask thins because currently the car is sitting at a auto shop, but they havent touched the car yet and they said if there is a recall - even though we dont know yet if thats the root of the problem - then I might want Honda to deal with it, since its free anyhow ...

What is your opinion?

Perfectly safe to drive during the day if that is indeed the problem. Would be worth checking to make sure the turn signals still work.

If there's a recall, I'd get Honda to fix it for free. At least on my old 90s Civic that switch assembly was close to $100 in parts alone. Well worth the 20 mile drive.

ok i will try to drive it tomorrow and see if it persists. will do it with the lights off of course. i would say from the description of what i said and others it seems to be the headlight issue right?

Wish we could give you reassurance.... lol.    Just watch your gauges, if none of them move its probably the headlights. Let us know what the dealer says. Hopefully it being a safety thing you get a free warranty repair.
