High Speed Internet in DC (Trinidad)
« on: April 30, 2016, 03:05:40 PM »
My partner and I will soon be moving to DC's Trinidad neighborhood, and we're looking for a good high speed internet provider (she works from home over the internet, doing technical support). Aside from the usual candidates - Verizon, Comcast, RCN - what other options are there? Do you have any good/bad experiences? We'd love to hear your thoughts!

The guide (unabridged) covers a lot of alternate ISP options depending on region and network providers.

In your case, given the regional options and your already knowing about RCN, there's also Earthlink (offers cable and dry loop DSL service in some Comcast and Verizon regions) and DSL Extreme (offers dry loop DSL service in Verizon regions at locations without FIOS) that I know of. Locals might know of a couple others, but this hits the major third party players.

DSL Reports is also a useful research tool for this stuff.

I've had RCN for two years now and am happy with it.  I work at home frequently and have no issues making VOIP calls and streaming Netflix.  If you don't have one already, do your self a favor and buy a cable modem.  It will pay for itself in about 6-8 months.

May I ask why Trinidad? I see your location is Seattle so I don't know how much you know about DC.  Trinidad is a gentrifying area but has been a hotbed of crime historically.  Also not super close to a metro although the streetcar on H St. did just open.  If you are buying, then I get it.
