Delta Amex - can I get the statement credit on a gift card?

My SO and I have both recently signed up for the Delta American Express Gold card during their 50k miles promotion; I am trying to accumulate up some miles for a trip next year. As part of the promo I can get a $50 statement credit for a Delta purchase. Does anyone know if I can buy a Delta gift card to get the credit?

I suspect I can but wondering if anyone has done this?

I bought a gift card yesterday for just this purpose.  I'll let you know if it works, but I think it will.

My purchases of airline gift cards have always been reimbursed by Amex as a travel credit.

The delta gift card on delta's website qualifies as a Delta purchase. I used this approach (and it worked) because I wasn't planning on buying my plane tickets during the promo period.
