Bike-friendly towns in Westchester?
« on: October 25, 2018, 03:42:50 PM »
Hello folks,

I am still new to Mustachianism, so I'm probably completely wrong to even think about buying an apartment of our own given where that we live in NYC, but it is all part of an attempt to lower our monthly rent and get some of it back when/if we leave the area at some point.

Since NYC is so expensive, we're looking at Westchester, and discovering that some towns don't even always have sidewalks and people look at me funny when I say that we'd like to be able to run regular errands, like grocery and drug store runs, without a car.

So, my question for NY Mustachians on Bikes (MoBs?) is: are there bike-friendly towns in Westchester with the kind of culture, infrastructure, size, layout that would allow regular people to do their errands on foot or by bike without fearing for their life? Proximity to a Costco or another store with good prices would be a bonus.

Thank you!

Westchester is not great in terms of bike friendly errands. Having said that there are places you can live with convenient train to NYC and stores that are walkable (probably a long walk for full size grocery store) or possible to bike but not ideal.

A few that come to mind: downtown White Plains, downtown New Rochelle, Eatchester/Tuckahoe, Pelham, Larchmont (the !ast two more expensive housing).

I grew up in Southern Westchester.  Now I visit regularly.

No, it's not bike friendly (other than the South County Trailway (bike trail)...but that's not really for errands...).  It's all about the car.

Yeah, I would have to agree that you can find towns and small cities in Westchester that are walkable for errands, pharmacy, groceries and train station, but they won't be bike friendly.  Most streets are just not wide enough for bikes, and often very busy and congested.

White Plains would work well if you want access to everything on foot. It might even be more bike-friendly than other towns.

Port Chester is walkable and has chain grocery stores and costco right near the train, as well as bakeries, pharmacies, restaurants, theater, etc. I wouldn't bike there though!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
