Approximating VTSAX with HSA options
« on: October 24, 2018, 02:05:52 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for some advice on investing my HSA. I was going to buy I only have $6K in the HSA and I don't see VTSAX pop up as an option. I've tried to follow some sample approximations (https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Approximating_total_stock_market), but I am unable to find the exact funds in any of the examples.

Also, I noticed that each fund had this disclaimer when viewing on my HSA website:
This is a low cost fund that is *not* paid for by your plan sponsor. Investing in this fund will result in a monthly fee 0.033% on the average value invested and will be charged to your cash balance.

Any suggestions on closest to VTSAX I can get with funds below? Or should I wait until I save more in my HSA? I've heard that the 0.033% fee might go away if I had more money in my HSA.

I've tried to follow some sample approximations (https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Approximating_total_stock_market), but I am unable to find the exact funds in any of the examples.

19%   MID-CAP BLEND   ----   VANGUARD EXTENDED MARKET INDEX INSTLPLUS   ----   VEMPX
81%   LARGE BLEND   ----   VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX INSTL PL   ----   VIIIX
That's the same as the fourth option in the Bogleheads wiki.

I've just looked this up for my plan, too. My choices are different than yours but I thought I'd post this in case it helps someone else --

I found this bit from https://jlcollinsnh.com/2013/05/02/stocks-part-xvii-what-if-you-cant-buy-vtsax-or-even-vanguard/ helpful:

"These next three are “Institutional Shares” and you might find them in your 401k or other employer-sponsored retirement plan:

VITPX: .02%/$200,000,000
VITNX: .04%/$100,000,000
VITSX: .04%/$5,000,000

So, when I recommend VTSAX you can substitute any of these if that’s what is available and/or if one of these others better meets your needs. The important thing is that you are buying the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Portfolio."

VTSAX is just a total market fund, right? That’s a really common offering, there’s nothing magic about VTSAX in particular. I have accounts with Schwab, Fidelity, and TD and all offer a total market fund with extremely low ER.

You have VIIIX, which is just a better version of VTSAX.  It has lower fees.

VIIIX is the S&P 500, while VTSAX is the total market.

My bad, I misread that.

Then if you follow the Boglehead link that you posted, you can go with 81% VIIIX and 19% the Vanguard Extended Market fund.  Extended Market is a blend of mid-cap and small cap stocks.

Thanks everyone! I don't have much experience in this field, so I didn't know what to do without finding an exact match in tickers from the wiki examples.
