Help-Toledo-Findlay Ohio mates
« on: July 18, 2018, 02:07:48 PM »
My wife got a job offer in Findlay, Oh area and currently she works in Dublin, Ohio area. We are doing weekend traveling now.
I live/work in Novi,Michigan area. We dont have kids yet.

While we are looking for work place near to each other (just her work exists in select locations), for time being we got to do the traveling.

Her suggestion is to take a house in Toledo which is 1hr and 20 min for me and 45 mins for her work. Atleast we both would be together.
Otherwise, she would need to stay in Findlay and we do weekend trips, so atleast we dont need to do miles.

I really do not have any information on both Toledo or Findlay cities.

1. If there are folks from these areas, can you please comment on where the safe place and good place to stay and avoid any kind of ghetto troubles or other issues?
2. Also is it a good idea of traveling (I hate traveling 1.2 hour one leg but she want to be with me)? its 70 miles for me and 45 miles for her if we do traveling.

Again, the next job of mine or her should be near to each other and we are working on it. So it is interim for 3-6 months.

Finding a place with easy access to I-75 will make both your commutes more streamlined.  Perrysburg is probably best for safe, suburban life.  Though it is a tad more expensive.

Trying2bFrugal - My fiance and I both live and work in the Findlay area and went to school in Toledo.  In fact, I actually grew up in a suburb of Toledo and am originally from Michigan so I am right in your footprint.  As for your situation.  If you want to even the drives slightly and make it closer to an hour for both of you, I would recommend one of the western suburbs not far off of 475/23.  Sylvania, Maumee, Monclova and Holland are all further north than Perrysburg and would help even the drive.  Toledo gets a bad rap sometimes but I loved growing up and living there.  Really as long as you stay in one of these burbs/west Toledo you should avoid much trouble.   Please feel free to DM me with details/specific questions and I would be more than happy to provide any and all input that I can regarding more details!  Depending on what your wife does - I suspect there are decent odds her and I may end up being coworkers.

As for the traveling - I know several people in very similar situations to you in which they live in Toledo and one spouse travels to Findlay while the other heads up to the Detroit area.  It can be challenging but is done frequently.

Thanks. We actually drove today to Perrysburg (two apartments) and seems liked a good option.

Thanks. Very true. We checked Findlay option too (moving to Findlay and i commute weekends). We checked the east side of the town. By taking the assumption highest home prices means less trouble. But Findlay seemed overall very peaceful.

I will pm you with some questions.

I thought 75 was closed for construction for a year or 2. Am I mistaken?

6 mos ago my mother sold her house, in Curtice (Ottawa county, Genoa school system), to a couple in which the wife worked in Findlay, The husband, I'm not not exactly sure where, but it was an equal distance in the oopposite direction. That made the home they bought, in the middle.

Perrysburg is good, My daughter just bought a place in Monclova township, that seems good too.

Rt 2 and Rt 51 have good and bad sections, but easy access to 75, 475, 23.

I think you have to decide if you want a more rural, suburban, or urban area.  And if you think you will ever have kids, schools may be important to you too. I have an opinion on that if you do.

This is JUST MY OPINION, but I'd stay away form the north and east parts of Toledo. East suburbs, when you get out of Toledo are fine.
It is also my opinion that if you want to get out of Toledo, try some of the counties around Lucas. I only have personal experience with Wood and Ottawa.

I am a big fan of Perrysburg (or Preciousburg - as some of my friends call it). I also really like Maumee. Since you aren't worrying about kids and schools then Maumee is cheaper than Perrysburg but equally quaint. You might also have cheaper utilities in Lucas County (Maumee) vs. Perrysburg (Wood County)

But if safety is your number 1 then you really can't beat the 'Burg.

Sylvania and Monclova twnshp are also very safe just not my personal preference- Sylvania seems to be full of stores and strip malls but also kind of expensive, and Monclova is too country for me. Pburg and Maumee are both historic small towns that eventually became Toledo suburbs.

There are also a ton of great community events in Perrysburg (Thursday = food truck rally/farmers market/free music on the town green, Fridays are the weekly car show in the summer, Saturday night is free movies on the town green, easy river access if that is important to you, great library, etc.). We are in Perrysburg often for their activities.

I've read that Ohio has 16% houses underwater, I'm not sure what that means, just offering what I've seen.

Out by the refinery where THH works, in Oregon, (okay, I admit to not knowing the right words and he is not here) they are building 2 electric generation plants, that use natural gas. That is Lucas county.  Access to Rt 2

The nuclear power plant in Ottawa county is being shut down and I think 3000 or so are losing their jobs. Houses may be reasonably priced, but only an option if one already has a job. Access to Rt 51

I vote you guys live in Findlay, Flag City USA, for purely nostalgic reasons.  Is Marathon hiring?  Are any of the universities hiring? Can you get a job in or around Findlay?  It always seemed like a pretty robust economy around there compared to Columbus.  Go to Dietz Brothers for their ice cream sundaes in a Chinese take out box for me :)

I work in Michigan and after some thought process she quit current company and monday will be moving to Findlay. We visited Findlay but except Marathon campus the city seemed very dull. We liked Perrysburg, but its 80 miles for my work place and 35 miles for her. If we stay together we would save on rent but burn on gas. For short term we dont know how we can find her an accommodation. Contracting is pain in butt.

Is there a good and bad place in Findlay?
