Help optimizing vehicles/transportation

Ack! We need to improve our vehicle situation, but we're not sure how to be both frugal and practical.

Current situation: 1 Honda Civic hybrid, 145k miles, family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens, 1 75lb hearing-alert dog). We don't all fit in the Civic if we include the dog.

Current travel: DH is a nurse at a hospital 6.5 miles away on surface streets. He works enough random shifts that he can't reliably take bus, but he currently rides bus 1 - 2 times per week. He HATES the bus.

Commute time: Driving (15 minutes); Bus (45 minutes); Bike (35 minutes)

We camp about 12 times per year, plus frequent hiking trips. DS is very active in scouting. :) We'd really like to start backpacking, but the little Civic won't make it to many of the spots. Currently we get rides/carpool/leave dog home when we head out; plus if DH has to work a weekend and the kids have camping trip, we're stuck (no bus on weekends). This is getting to be quite a pain in the tush (we're getting rides to campsites/scout events 3 times in the next month). Add in having to rent the Home Depot truck to transport home-improvement stuff, and we're really needing something that can haul more people & stuff & fit more places. Plus a few times this year where DH has car, and I get the "come get your puking kid" call from the school... Walking a kid a mile home while they are puking is kinda not fun.

So... here's what we're considering:

1. Swap Civic for Honda Fit and get a little trailer for camping gear. But... we'd still have 1 car issue for weekends where DH works/kids camp.

2.  Keep Civic as DH commute vehicle and get 2nd vehicle for family trips/camping (Honda Fit or minivan?).

3. Get DH an electric bike and swap Civic for Honda Fit or minivan. DH would probably only bike during nice weather. His employer pays $3/day if you bike to work... but no one he knows bikes.

4. Keep Civic and just be annoyed a lot and beg rides from friends. This will cost more in home-brew beer as bribes for our long-suffering friends. Or we might have to start renting something for trips.

Any help figuring out what would work best, and not end up with 2 brand new clown cars, would be appreciated! I'm dreading the summer camping/hiking/scouting season as I feel like we're being complete leeches on our friends. :(

Of course, no one here is going to advocate for getting a second car. Suck it up and bike/bus.

That said... The Fit is great. I miss mine. That said there are probably MUCH better used car values around.

Have you looked at the Toyota Matrix? It's basically a Corolla with a small wagon body. Better yet is the Pontiac Vibe, which is the EXACT same car built in the same factory by the same workers using the same tools and the same parts, but with a GM badge, and thus a lower resale value. I see them all the time for less than $5,000, and in good shape with relatively low miles. If you find a clean one it should run to 300k miles without too much money and effort.

Folks also overlook the Mazda 2. It's a bit smaller than the Fit and isn't quite as versatile, but it's cheaper and gets better fuel economy. It's also more fun. You're probably in the $5-6k range for a 2007 vintage car with around 100k miles, though.

What I'd do if I REALLY needed two cars? Get a one-owner 2002-2003 Mazda Protege5 with 100k miles for $3,000-3,500 and with a manual transmission, and call it a day. Keep the Civic - you're not going to get much for it if you sell it as hybrid resale values are sort of screwy. Get the Protege5, carry only liability insurance (maybe uninsured driver coverage), drive it as little as possible until you no longer need two cars, maintain it, then sell it for $2,500, which is about rock bottom for these cars as long as they don't have more than 250,000 miles and are in decent shape.

I'd get a second car; most likely a minivan. We have two, and love, love, love them. Your family trips will become a lot more fun, especially once you have a vehicle capable of fitting your entire family at once.

^ Do that.  A 35 minute bike ride is about a 20-22 minute bike ride, which is barely slower than driving.  Plus, you don't put out as much energy so you can wear waterproof gear and not actually get wet (normally, waterproof gear just means you soak yourself with sweat).

I'd suggest the Rad Wagon or Rad Rover if you don't know much about ebikes.  They're factory built bikes that are cost competitive with DIY builds, and are under $2k shipped.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
