There's not a fixed rule. I'm sure you could find an expected timeline, but it really is 100% personal preference. What is your minimum standard of performance for carpet? Does you carpet still do that?

Personally, as long as it's physically intact, it's stil ok for me. If it's physically ok, but stained or dirty: Try doing one of those steam clean runs (you can rent a machine at Home Depot) and some spot cleaning. That might get you a couple more years out of it.

Once the carpet is damaged or worn to where you can no longer tolerate it, get some new stuff. It will get there.

If you want some more opinions, try posting some pictures and more details? How old is the carpet? Do you have kids / pets?

Makes sense. The carpet feels cushy but it is getting hard to vacuum. Tried steam cleaning once but the stains don't go away. I am not sure how old this carpet is. We bought this house 2 years ago. At that time I did not want to change it. So I had the seller shampoo and clean it with a professional and just took it as is. I have a 3YO but she doesn't dirty the carpet. She makes a dry mess like pencil shavings, etc.

Even dry mess will sink in over time.

Personally, I pulled out the carpet because it stank (previous owner's dog peed on it, then my cat had to mark territory). It looked ok, but was truly offensive to the nose.

I have found that no matter how I try, I can't get it as clean as someone with a truck mounted system. And the shampoos you can buy will actually tend to attract dirt.

When it stinks and when you’re tired of vacuuming it. You’ll be grossed out when they pull it up and you see all the gunk under there. Replaced our whole house with wood and so happy.  Only sweep occasionally now.  My 7 yo also appreciated a flat hard floor that the can build stuff and roll cars on.  Tile or vinyl is a practical choice too.  They make ones that look a lot like wood and are really low maintenance.

I ripped up all the carpet on my main level and replaced with laminate, very happy.  Also ripped up the carpet from the stairs and replaced with hardwood.  Debating doing upstairs as well, new carpet is nice but expensive compared to 0.99/sq ft laminate.

$0.99/sft laminate? Did you get the TrafficMaster from Home Depot? If so, would you recommend it?

Yeah, I'm the one who recommended it to you in the other thread.

Got it. Thanks. My local HD doesn't have any samples unfortunately.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
