Help me name my Retirement Calculator
« on: June 26, 2013, 05:47:38 AM »
Any of you that are on the FinancialIndependence subreddit will see an identical post to this.

I've been dropping hints the last few weeks that I've been reverse-engineering Firecalc, as to add more features to it (and continue doing so, at user requests).  I'm about to the point where I want to ask people to "beta" test it out, but I have no freakin' clue what to name this thing.

I'm partial to using the word "Simulation" "Simulator" or "Sim" in it somewhere, but it doesn't have to be.

I figured I'd commission some of the more creative minds in one of my favorite forums for some ideas.  I'll toss around some "beta" invites to my favorite ones in the coming weeks whenever I actually kick it off (assuming life doesn't get in the way).

So mustachians, what would you name a new Retirement Calculator?  For reference, here is a list of most of the ones on the net now: http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Retirement_calculators_and_spending

Who is your target audience(s)? Do you want to stand out from the dozens of calculators with "retirement" in their name?

I like Retirement Number Cruncher.

I tried to look at it from the perspective of what would I click on if I saw the name on a search.

I have no real ideas for names, but just want to say I'm very excited about this project.  GO BO KNOWS!

I don't have a target audience necessarily.  I just wanted to improve the features of Firecalc.   Since I started this thread, I'm leaning toward focusing on the fact that I'll be constantly soliciting ideas for new features.  "Crowdsourced Retirement Number Cruncher"?

I love that you have continuous feedback and improvement in mind. That calls to mind something like "Your" or "Our" in the name to make your users to feel included in the on-going development of features. "Beta" works well in that regard, too.

"Falcon"

It's a mashup of some of the letters in FIREcalc, and falcons are badass.

Are you taking feature suggestions?  :)

I'd like a machine usable interface.  I've built one on top of firecalc with some web scraping... but a REST (or some simple XML) interface would be teh awesome.

I love "falcon."

And an API would rock the retirement calculator scene. The mind boggles....

Ha, maybe somewhere down the line when I've refined some of the new features, I could release it as a RESTful service.  I'm sure that at some point the amount of features will start to make it unruly.

You should make the calculator look like a cute little bunny rabbit and name it George.

So I can hug him and pet him and squeeze him and and pat him and pet him and rub him and caress him and...

Can I still tend the rabbits, George?

(I may have been out too long in the sun today.)

If no API, I'd suggest at least making it scrapable.  In other words: make sure it still works in a fallback mode with no javascript.

FIRECalc21?

You could go for the boring SEO approach and call it "Financial Independence Retirement Calculator".

How about the "Holy shit, all I have to do is stop buying Big Macs and Escalades and I can have another twenty years of free time to ride bikes-calculator"?

How about "Financial Independence Retirement Estimator?"  Conveniently acronyms as FIRE.

Why not brainstorm other cool words like fire (see: falcon suggestion above) and just backronym it to something useful?
