Title: Help Me decide on a Health plan
Post by: carloco on October 30, 2014, 07:48:43 AM
My employer this year is offering a HDHP for the first time.  I think it would be better for us but there are a few glitches that I may be overlooking due to my delight in the possibility of having a HSA.  Also, normally my wife carries one son in her health plan and I carry the other one.  This presents a possible problem because both HDHP have a 3K individual deductible and a 6K family.  Therefore, we could be out a maximum of 12K.  To reduce risk I could buy a family policy but then it would cost more that 1K.
Here are the number for Just for the Premium
PPO:               2800
HDHP:            900+1100 HSA: 2400 contribution by each employer. total 4800.
HDHP family : 3500. HSA contribution 2400
Now, I ran the number for 2013 and 2014, adding the cost of premium +co-pay+ allowed charge paid by the insurance and it looked like in 2013 I would have saved 3K and in 2014 $2400.
It seems obvious that even in this year when I saw the doctor for neck pain and physical therapy we would have come out ahead.  But we we could have exposed to a 12K out of pocket.
I hope this not too confusing.   Thanks
