Airbnb income or cost saving

We rent out our apartment we live in once a month. Should we consider this as income or cost saving when figuring out our savings rate?

I rented out a room in my house, I also rented out my basement as a separate suite.

The taxman said it was income.

Let me clarify this is not a tax question.

More of a lifestyle question.

Fair enough, I still say its income.  I count income when money lands in my hand.  Savings is when no money moves. Getting income from rent is an awesome side hustle.

The taxman voted income too. Feel free to ignore him, nobody likes the poor guy. I only included him as an aid in the thought process.

You're getting cash in, so I would personally count this as income and not saving.
