Help! Need quick replacement for printer/scanner!
« on: October 06, 2015, 11:42:18 AM »
Any suggestions for cost-effective, quality printer that could also handle fair amount of scanning work?

Bonus points if you have any idea how well the scanner would handle thin court copy paper.

Hmn.  I recommend mostly laser printers to people.  The price per print is much lower over time.  Do you need color as well?  i have a brother printer that duplexes and is 8 or 9 years old and still going strong.   Are you set on inkjet or are you already using laser?

We got rid of our laser printers in the office because my boss bought an HP 8600 Pro for his house and loved it. He bought all of us our own for each office. It's been rock solid and we got one for our house as well. I think it's up to 8640 now but the 30 and 20 series (older models) are available on Amazon still. It has a touch screen and is super easy to set up and use. Works over wifi with iPads as well.

I tell all my friends and family to get one now. It blows my minds that we can put robots on Mars but here we are 40 years later and printers still suck. But my HP 86XX Pro has sucked the least.

I'm not sure if I have a laser or ink printer.  Which is preferable?

Page 2 of this article has a printing cost calculator, (just an excel sheet built into the site) that allows you to measure your printing needs/cost of printer/ink to find the most economical solution. I liken the mustachian concern for cost of ink to the mustachian concern for cost of gas mileage when purchasing a vehicle--it is almost the only consideration.

Try a scan app for your smart phone if you scan less than 10 pages/month. If you do any really intensive scanning (like you're a small biz), get the scansnapix500.

The printer scanner typically are bad at both. Check the wirecutter, but the cheap brother printer should be around 80 and is solid.
