Best short term investment vehicle while waiting to pay taxes? (cap gains/1099)

I'm holding onto some cap gains from a home sale and have recently become an independent contractor (putting away 30-40% of income to pay the tax man). I'm wondering, what is the best short term investment vehicle for these funds, that I could pull out on April 15th to pay the tax man. Thoughts?

Savings account.

There are some online savings accounts (Ally, Barclay, a few others) that pay about 1% instead of the under 0.25 that I see in my local banks.  It would be a safe place to keep the funds but still be reasonable for the time/risk level.
