Health Sharing Ministries
« on: December 04, 2015, 05:27:10 AM »
Even after FIRE, income levels are high enough that we don't qualify for subsidy. So the costs range from $900 for Bronze up to $1400 for Gold per month (no platinum anymore) for us as a couple.
A friend pointed to Health sharing ministries, and they look quite rational and reasonable. Does anyone have comments or criticism or an experience to share?

My favorite so far is https://www.libertyhealthshare.org
While you take a pledge of values, I don't disagree with their list. There are limits on pre-existing condiitions and there is a per incidence cap. Also, they have an exclusion for high risk hobbies. They list mountain climbing and bugee jumping, but I'm not sure about bicycling etc.
Costs for a couple are about $350 for a couple. There is a straight $297 charge and then an EMS and Catastrophic surcharge about $25 each.

A friend of ours has used one for several years (I don't recall offhand which one, maybe medishare?).  They had a few big healthcare expenses and didn't have any complaints with the system.  I've looked into it a bit for us, but I have a HDHP through work and my employer pays all of my premiums and half of the family premiums so it would cost more to get in on one of these share plans.  I would consider it in the future though if circumstances change.
