Health insurance options for Government contractors
« on: August 13, 2018, 04:03:17 PM »
Dear Mustachians, this is not a fancy question we usually see here, :).

My partner and I just landed a federal contract, which is to be started soon. For now, we need to provide health insurance coverage for our employees -- for now, just my partner and myself. My question is what health insurance option do we have, and whether there is any special program we can consider given it is a federal contract?

Understand our question might not have a simple answer. I did quite bit of research online but still didn't find good answers. Thanks a lot for your attention...

I would think something via your state insurance exchange would be fine. I suggest talking to the contracting office of whatever agency hired you as they will be able to tell you the specifics. Be sure you find out the exact rules and follow them to a T. Federal contracting does not have flexibility and you can loose this contract and future ones if you don’t follow it to the letter

Do you have to offer health insurance if you don’t have any employees only owners? Even if you otherwise meet the exceptions to ACA for being so small? I would contact your local SBA or OFCCP to ask these questions. I’d personally start with SBA, since they probably have more general info whereas DOL will be more employment related compliance and I’m not sure if health insurance compliance would be in that category. I would think even if they’re not the “right place” to get those answers, they would try to point you in the right direction.

@opensrc congrats on landing what sounds like your first federal contract. I've been in and out of that biz for awhile and don't think there are any special programs regarding health insurance. You should just go out and find a healthcare plan for your small business. As @Peachtea pointed out, you might not be required to offer health insurance, but not offering it will make it harder for you to hire.
