IRL Support/Mastermind/Kindreds Group?
« on: November 28, 2014, 04:22:02 PM »
I am feeling an intense need lately to be with people who have similar goals IRL (FI, self-employment, etc.).  I am not sure where/how to find my tribe locally.  I am on a fantastic group of neighborhood moms but I found a running buddy there and we fell apart quickly due to scheduling problems.  So I guess that's one lesson learned, be clear and explicit about when, where, etc. the group would meet.  At this point I am most interested in meeting with other women, specifically other mothers.

Does anyone have experience with a group that is part support, part encouragement, accountability by virtue of existing/pleasant pressure of having something good to report each time we gather - not by people facepunching or calling each other out on failures?

Whenever I've tried to start groups that are social/informal but with a common purpose they tend to sputter and croak within a few meetings, so I know that the first get togethers are crucial and must meet whatever needs people are bringing to the table.  However, sometimes in trying to do that I've made the purpose too broad and then it meets no one's needs.

Have you been involved in such a group?  What made it successful, and what would you have changed about it?  Did you pay for the group or was it something that formed organically?  How long did it last?  Other ideas or suggestions?

For longevity, it is easier to join or set up a branch of a group with an existing structure.

The organisations I know about that might suit you are the Women's Institute, the Mothers' Union and the National Women's Institute.  Other options are church groups (the Mothers' Union is churchy, I think) or business/philanthropic groups such as Rotary, Lions, Probus, etc.

Depending where you are in the world, of course.

I am thinking something short-term with a focused purpose more than an ongoing mommy group; that I could join at any time.  I am talking a group of women who are self-employed or seeking that and/or have an interest in the types of themes we discuss here - FI, simplicity.

Fidgiegirl

Would you be interested in doing an online weekly meetup, via skype or google chat? I'm facing a similar issue. I'm apart of some mom groups in my area. My financial, business, and early retirement goals are just not something I feel comfortable discussing. It seems that the moms I hang out with have different focuses than I.

I'd love to get a mastermind group together with people who share similar values (ie family, FI, self-employment,generally being awesome.) while also being encouraging and giving helpful feedback.

There is a good Lifehacker post on how to set-up a master mind group:http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/how-to-start-and-run-a-mastermind-group.html

It sounds like you have a very specific demographic you are looking for that most moms you casually meet wouldn't fit into - you might need to go even a narrower focus though -  parenting, FI, Self-employed -  finding enough people interested in all three might be tough and you want to be very selective about who you have in a mastermind group if it is going to be effective.

One idea would be to set up a private facebook page to jump things off. I am a member of several mastermind facebook pages which are awesome. It doesn't solve your IRL need for community though.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
