My boyfriend cuts my hair.  For a little while, I tried getting it professionally cut and layered. it would look great for a month, but the cost and inconvenience were too much, and it always needed upkeep to keep looking "right."  A basic style that I can keep up with simple (free!) trims in the bathroom once in a while suits me much better.

I cut my own hair! It's amazing. My cuts are someone complicated (often involving layers and bangs), but it's long which makes it easier to cut on my own. I watched a bunch of youtube videos first to try to figure it out. At some point during every cut, I think, "OH NO! It's ruined! Oh no, oh no!" but I've always been able to remedy whatever I thought I screwed up.

For those of you who say your hair is too weird to cut - my hair is super crazy, and I think it helps! If it was naturally gorgeously straight, it would be hard to hide mistakes, but since it's wavy in some spots and super curly in others, it's pretty easy to blend mistakes. However, I dry it and straighten it prior to cutting. I would never cut it wet - that would be really hard.

Oooh, I am trying that video's technique tonight. Thanks to everyone who confirmed it worked for them. I don't even need to buy fancy scissors!

I have short hair that is tapered.  There's no way I could do the back and sides myself.

I color it myself and get it cut at a cheap chain for $20 including tip every six weeks.

I let my hair grow out for about 2 years.  I'm split end free so no trims needed.   Then I go to a stylist who will cut my hair for free if I donate it, which by this point is plenty long enough to donate.  But if I were to attempt my own hair cuts I'd look into a Flowbee.  I use to see the commercials where you can cut long layers with it.  Haven't tried it myself but the Mr. cuts his hair with a Flowbee.  Before that I had cut his hair for years.
