Hacked no cost computer speakers - help!

So, in 1996 we were given a 1992 Sony FH-B150 mini hifi stereo system that I've been using for the past 15 years plugged into our computer for computer sound.  Currently I take a single output from the back of the computer and run it  to the stereo's RCA Aux inputs.   

The problem is the CD player now makes an awful, unbearable ticking noise (we never use the CD), so we need a new computer speaker solution.  Cue Internet shopping...  no...  wait!...  MMM!



My computer has a https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55_LX/ motherboard with 6 audio outputs (5.1 sound I believe), but they are 3.5 mm stereo mini-jacks.  The Sony speakers are wired to the stereo system using bare wires on push clamps. 

The motherboard has Audio:
VIA VT1708S 8-Channel HD Audio Codec
  - supports Jack-Detection, Multistreaming and Front Panel Jack Retasking
  - Optical S/PDIF our port at back I/O
 

I believe the power to the speakers comes from the stereo's amp, not the computer, but that's where the MMM Hive Mind comes in!


Question - if I go to the effort of wiring 3.5 mm minijacks onto the bare wires of the two Sony speakers and plugging them direct into the motherboard L & R outputs, will my computer be able to play full sound from them?  Or do they still need an amplifier?

Does anyone in Vancouver BC have an old amp gathering dust they'd like to go to a good cause?

OK, this now turns funny.

My buddy's two year old was visiting a few weeks ago.

He pressed the FF button on the tape deck, which has been pressed in for the past three weeks, making a whirring clicking sound!

Problem solved.

Thanks, I was looking at those in my youtube searches.

Next up - washing machine doesn't spin. I overloaded it. Its a 4 year old Samsung front loader.  Time for the screwdriver and youtube.
