What can I do with a car lease?
« on: October 30, 2012, 01:15:43 PM »
Here's my situation : last year my gf and I got ourselves a real nice 2011 toyota matrix on a 5-year lease. At the time, it sounded like a really great plan! Only 320$/mo for a brand new car for 5 years. Since it was our first car for both of us, we preferred a car lease since you don't have to deal about anything else than basic maintenance and it was cheaper than financing a new car. We looked a bit at used cars, but we were kind of scared and didn't know what to look for.

Fast forward to today, I can confidently say that this was the worst decision of our lives. We should have gotten a used 3-4k$ car instead but what's done is done.

I use the car to commute for work so I really need it now but in January, we'll be moving closer to downtown where public transport is awesome and I will start looking to change job to work from home or closer to home (since where I currently work it's a huge pain in the ass to go with public transport and impossible by bike). My girlfriend already works some place where she has the choice between bike or public transport so if I do get another job, we will barely ever use the car anymore.

What are my options if I have a leased car that I don't use anymore? Can I take it back to the dealer or transfer the lease to another person?

transfer the lease to another person?
This. You can find someone to transfer the lease to. Look up websites like swapalease.com.

Damn that was fast. I just did a quick google search for lease swap and I've found like 5 websites that are specific to my region so that's really great. Thanks a lot!
