Title: Got Gifted One of Those Pod Espresso Machines
Post by: TooManyGuitars on August 29, 2015, 03:29:19 PM
So I've just started a Buy Nothing group in my neighbourhood.  The group is still quite small.  I posted yesterday asking if anyone had an extra coffee plunger (French press) they didn't need anymore, as my 7yo daughter had just broken mine in a sweet hearted attempt to surprise my wife and I with morning coffee.

Got a response from a friend down the street and my wife went over there to get it.  She came home with a very tiny cracked plunger (pretty much useless for us)...and a near new Caffitaly S04 pod based espresso machine, including several dozen pods (most of which are past their expiry date), a fancy rack for said pods, and an extra face for the machine (blue, in case red gets old).  Apparently these folks had just upgraded to a new espresso machine of some sort.

Ironically, this machine which requires expensive purchases to operate was the first official transaction for my Buy Nothing group.

So I'm curious what people think we should do with this thing.  It's a nice machine ($170 or so I think), but pods are an expensive way to drink coffee, and an environmental disaster.

Keep for a while and use up the expired pods?  Ditch it immediately and continue to look for a replacement plunger?  (I want a nice steel one that is $110 new). Try it with some fresh pods? (Range from 30-70 cents a cup)

I will say this - it makes a damn fine cup of coffee.

Use up the pods and then sell the machine.

Agree. I used to a be a barista and I bought a $30 espresso machine that works great. The pods are way to expensive and don't even taste that great.
