Good car insurance plans in MA
« on: July 27, 2015, 02:09:44 PM »
Car insurance is up for renewal in a month.  I've had Commerce Insurance for a long time.  Got a AAA discount.  Now I'm reevaluating.

Primary car is a 2014 Chevy Volt (plug in hybrid electric)
Wife's car used mostly for work is a 2005 Toyota Matrix
I also have a 2000 GMC 1500 Sierra truck for hauling firewood and craigslist finds.  The truck on has 1-2k yr put on it so I carry the minimum.

Can you recommend an insurance carrier?

Are you looking for cheaper rates or better service? When I comparison shopped in MA about 3 years ago, GEICO was the cheapest for me, and I have only had one claim since then -- windshield replacement due to a rock chip, which was handled without any hassle. Before that I had Amica, but no claims with them. I switched for a significantly lower rate (like $200/year less for the same coverage).

I've had Commerce for many many years.  I comparison shopped a couple years ago and decided to stay with them.  My insurance agent once drove several towns over to deliver insurance documents to me so I could register a new car the next day and that, as well as several other good experiences with them, also influences my choice.

Looking for cheaper rates.  Will call Geico tomorrow.  Thanks.  Any others have low rate experience in MA.

I had good luck with MetLife.  No claims, so can't comment on that, but definitely the cheapest around for me.

Thanks for the replies.  I called Geico.  My 3 car policy went from $2265 to $1392.  All the same coverage levels.  Unbelievable.  Here's a funny commericial to watch in celebration:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pvcj9xptNOQ

Change is effective midnight tonight.  I'm stilli in disbelief.

I'm in the same exact boat, MA renewal in a month and I currently have Commerce.  I'm having my agent requote me while dropping a few things like Collision/Comp on an 03 car.  I tried Geico's online quote and got $706 for the year.  I can't see Commerce coming under $1,000 so when I hear back about the requote, I'll likely call Geico to do the switch.  Is calling the new insurance all I need to do to switch or do I have to set up anything with my agent first?

I started filling out Geico's form online at 8:30.  Talked to an agent, no waiting time, at 9 pm.  Was done by 9:30.  Have your coverage selection sheet in front of you and go through each item.  It's pretty fast.  They also wanted to give me car loan insurance if my car goes into the shop.  It was 10 bucks I think, but we have 3 vehicles between the two of us, so I declined.  Also road side assistance is 20/yr.  May get rid of AAA.  Not sure yet.

Geico told me they would get Commerce deactivated.  I have not called to confirm that yet.

I was impressed with Geico's customer service.  Good luck.

Update:  I took the money I saved and just allocated it toward my 403b today.

Great timing, my wife calls me at work to tell me her car broke down while at my mother's house.  Hopefully it's nothing big but the first thing that came to mind (after knowing she and my son are okay of course) is she'll want a newish car(that we'd have to keep the collision/comprehensive on) and there goes the insurance discount lol.  Either way, Geico seems to be the way to go so I'm glad it was convenient for you.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
