Gifted 3k worth of materials - how can I repay the kindness?
« on: March 01, 2015, 05:10:07 PM »
Hello all,

My boyfriend and I are currently living in and renovating a cheap house we bought.  Recently my boyfriends dad (retired construction company owner) gained salvage rights to a building that will be torn down.  We spent one day getting stuff out that we will use for our house and helping him get stuff out to sell/give away to others.  Next week/weekend will be the same.

We are receiving around $3,000 worth of materials if we had to buy them new.  I know we are helping him a little by getting out other stuff he is selling/giving away, but I feel guilty about the amount we are receiving.  Any ideas on how to repay him without cash (he won't accept that).  I will send him some homemade baked good and a meal or two, but I feel that is fairly insubstantial.

Thank you!

Be nice to him in general, but he's helping to house his son with those materials and probably looks on that as some combination of a duty and a pleasure. Thank him, bake him those goodies, and make an effort to be a great addition to the family. I bet that's the repayment he'd like most.

After the work is done, a big hug, a tour, and "we couldn't have done it without you!"

Sounds like a good guy.
