Title: Gift Ideas
Post by: Rebecca Stapler on June 17, 2013, 09:30:48 AM
I'm sure you Mustacians have some great homemade gifts and low-cost thoughtful gifts that you give people in your life. Please share!

I'm an extreme couponer, so I frequently get things for free that I know other family members would like, and I save them for their Christmas stockings and birthdays. All the gifts I gave to my mom last Christmas I got for free and she loved them.
I also give family I see over the holidays a loaf of Greek Christmas bread.

For the family we don't see, I would like to find something thoughtful, low-cost, and inexpensive to mail. They are boys under 7 and teenage girls.

I've started making candied orange peels. Remarkably tasty and inexpensive. Cut the peels (that you normally throw away), scrape out the white part best you can. Boil the peels in water two times. (throw out the water each time). Then boil in sugar water (1/2 cup sugar, one cup water) or half an hour. Take them out and put on waxed paper. They're candied! You can roll them in sugar or dip them in melted chocolate if you like chocolate. I've found these to be very popular. They are extremely expensive bought from a candymaker, because they require hands-on. But for someone at home, it is a labor intensive, money light way of making long-lasting treats.
