Title: Gift ideas for a location independent new grad?
Post by: ElleFiji on June 19, 2018, 07:56:53 PM
One of my bestest friends just graduated - chances are that she will move around the next few years for work. She's survived the past 10+ years on next to no income, so a frugality resource wouldn't work.

I'm looking for an idea for something to point her towards wealth accumulation without being preachy. I am so so proud of her and want to celebrate the F out of her...but as part of the gift I want to help her start building for the next phase.

The other pieces of the gift will probably be a used and hated laptop and something luxurious. Or should I leave the PF gift for once she gets the job?

A printed out copy of that If You Can pdf, maybe along with a $100 bill earmarked to add to the IRA she opens (wink wink nudge nudge)? If you're already giving her a laptop and luxury item that may be a bit much, but it's what I plan to do with my younger cousins who graduate college.

Hee hee - for clarity she is a gen x and ten years my senior and the smartest person I've ever met.

The laptop is a tool - I hate it, hers is dead. I have no use for it as soon as I finish this contract. It's more of a hand me down with coincidental timing ,

By luxury, I mean 1-3 items from a fancy soap store - maybe $30 max.

This idea is perfect for a younger grad! I have 2 who are getting the Get Your Money Together workbook plus maybe a cheque.

What about a few shares of a "fun" stock, maybe tied to her interests? Years ago I bought a few shares of a local company, because that got you into the annual shareholders meeting which was a pretty good party. (A lot of my neighbors did the same.) No longer live there, but the stock has done very well. I'm not going to buy a Lamborghini or anything, but it was fun to watch it grow.
