Hawaii Cell Phone
« on: September 17, 2014, 10:04:19 PM »
So... Here I am looking to acquire a new cell phone and plan. I really wanted to go with Republic Wireless with the Moto G but they do not offer their services out here on the Hawaiian Islands. So I am curious as to what you all would recommend as an alternative for Republic and the Moto G?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Aloha! Have you heard about https://www.freedompop.com/ They have teamed up with Sprint, so their coverage network is pretty big and includes HI. They have internet and mobile phone solutions, so check 'em out and see if they have a plan that might work for your data needs.

If you don't use much data, you might want to buy a simple (non-smart) prepaid phone that doesn't have internet and just use public WiFi with a tablet or laptop for your data needs.

All four of the large carriers have network coverage on the islands, and all of the real MVNOs provide service out there. That said, the two best coverage maps are with Verizon and AT&T. Depending on who your previous carrier is, there's no reason why you can't just stick with them and keep your handset working on an MVNO of that carrier. That alone will save a lot of money and time. A list of recommended and reliable providers is in the guide.

As for Republic, it's no big loss. There really are better options for the money if you just research a little and run the numbers.
