Quick thoughts on my 401k allocation
« on: January 20, 2016, 09:23:50 AM »
I'm not an investment guru.  And I don't make changes to my 401k allocations frequently.  But after logging in and seeing my 1 year return has been -1.24%, I was alarmed.  I know when it comes to 401ks you're supposed to "set it and forget it" but the bottom line is I'm not really sure how to determine if what I have is good or not. I know many people will have more questions so please feel free to shoot.....

If it makes it better, my return is -7% for the last year.
And, if you think this is my first year really saving money I think you can understand what I feel :).
If it is fine, I will post my allocation too here to receive critics - I also expect a face punch - but keep in mind it was my first year in the US, first time investing, still learning on what all the types of investment options mean.
If you will ask about the international exposure, I thought (and still think) that investing on only US "things" is not for me.
So I am ok with the international part of my funds, I am curious if I did something else wrong :).
I realized after some time that some of the funds below are almost the same thing, I will try to consolidate those in only one, the one with the smallest cost.
Please let me know if I should open my own thread about this.

Yea, mine was close to -8% and I have it in Vanguard Inst Index and Vanguard Tot Bonds. I'm not touching it tho, because I look at all the other choices and they are all down. It's only a matter of time until it flips the other way... Right? ;)

Look at what the markets did. Down 1% sounds about right for indexing with international exposure.

Quick question: why are you holding the vanguard extended AND the diamond small/mid-cap fund?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
