Frugal tour companies (hike or bike in US or Canada)
« on: February 23, 2021, 01:37:47 PM »
Do you know of any tour companies that offer hiking or biking tours that are not expensive?
Looking for something 1-2 weeks long.
They organize the stops, meals and cart gear between them.
Would prefer sleeping in a real bed each night but open to camping with cots.
Happy to help with setup, meal prep & tear down each day.

Any ideas?

TIA

PTF. My dad did something like this in France and loved it.

I don't know of any companies offering such a thing, and I've given some thought to creating something along these lines as a fun FIRE business... If first started thinking about it when I ran into a group on a supported cycle tour while I was doing an 800 mile solo tour around Alaska. I'd essential help a person or group plan and execute Alaskan adventures in exchange for them covering my expenses.

It would be a little hard to call it frugal staying in a bed every night up here, but it'd be possible to stay a some cheaper places with planning or rent a RV if the group size made that cost effective. Some of my favorite places are definitely tent only locations though.

Check out RAGBRI. It's a bike ride across Iowa. I did it some years ago. I paid to be part of a group that transported my gear and would set up solar showers for us. Very inexpensive and super fun ride. You have to pay for food along the way. Small towns along the way have breakfast for you in the church basement. Eat pie in someone's front yard.

I used Mac Adventure in France a couple of years ago.  They now have US tours.

We went to Tombstone park for a week. Camping. It was awesome. Different hikes each day, depending on the fitness level of the people. We actually split up so a couple of people could do more demanding things. Just like all the photos.

PTF! I have browsed Mac's Adventures to dream about this kind of travel, but (at the time) it appeared that the North American options were "drive yourself" tours. That was not what I was looking for. Looking forward to the options that you folks recommend!

Did a little searching and Wildland Trekking has some hiking tours that are "inn-based" - https://wildlandtrekking.com/trip-styles/inn-based-hiking-tours/. Not sure if they would meet your definition of frugal - the shorter trips don't look too bad.  I think you'll have problems finding anything that's > 1 week, that tends to be the max for these sorts of guided hikes with porters carrying your stuff.  If you don't mind camping, REI has some shorter hiking trips that seem pretty affordable (<$1K).

Cycle Oregon. I did it in 2001. Ride during the day, all your gear is transported to the new location (it's camping). There's a whole "village" set up every day, food (included in package price), beer tent, live music entertainment, and best of all hot showers!
The only drawback (or maybe not?), my ex sis in law did it numerous times and complained about all the male doctors and lawyers hitting on her!

I know here in Ontario, a local waterfront trail trust does an annual one week supported bike tour (the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure) for about $1200. Includes some group meals, camping in your own tent, luggage transport and a ride in the support vehicle if u get tired. You ride 60-100km/day.

In North Carolina, there is an annual supported bike tour (Mountains to Coast), along with two where you camp in one spot and ride during the day (Mountians or Coast).  I would assume there are similar events in other states.  I think the tour is mostly camping in towns along the way, but there are some optional upgrades to the support/accommodations.

Road Scholar (fka Elderhostel) does these types of trips across the globe for people 50+.  My dad has rafted the Grand Canyon, hiked the Havasupai reservation, and biked the Black Hills with Road Scholar and loved all the trips.
