Frugal shopping places in the Bay Area?
« on: April 27, 2017, 08:42:28 AM »
Hi everyone,

I need some tips on smart and frugal shopping in the Bay Area in California. I am going to Mountain View, CA for a week for a conference in Mid-May and I want to do some ‘smart’ shopping. Usually clothes are cheaper in the US and I like to buy some necessities whenever I go. The Bay area is not the cheapest place to do that but I’d like to at least try.

What I’d be interested in:

- Women Shoes:
o A pair of boots; I’ve been looking for one for three years, I want something that’ll last for years, preferably knee-length leather boots.
o Flats usually Toms, maybe I'll try something cheaper but they Do last.
o Running shoes at Adidas or Nike outlets.
o I want dress shoes as well, maybe Aldo, I want something that’ll last but not necessarily brands.
- Women clothes:
o I mostly shop at Express, Gap, Old Navy or Forever 21. I like their style and I usually wear either pants with blouses and jackets or sweaters or dresses with leggings and sweaters. In an effort to adapt a capsule wardrobe,             I’m thinking of having more dresses now. Nothing fancy; but classic and stylish (IMO :)), either casual or business casual, occasionally business.
- Men Shoes:
o MrGeek is a fan of Timberland, I sometimes find them at Burlington, otherwise at Timberland outlets.
- Kids’ clothes:
o This is where I have no idea where to start, I did not have kids when I lived in the US. I want summer clothes for a 2 years old boy and a 6 year girl. Also some baskets and other shoes for the boy.
- Underwear (men & women):
o I get mine at Victoria Secret because I don’t know another place where they come cheap and stylish but I’m open to suggestions.
o Any pointer on a store specialized on men’s underwear? Nothing fancy just good quality at an affordable price.

Places I know:

I will be in the Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Santa Clara area; I’ve identified some malls I went to last year:
- Great Mall: it was cheap but not a lot of choices
- Westgate Mall: it was so empty and I didn’t buy anything
- Westfield Valley Fair: I really liked it and it had everything I was looking for, but a bit expensive.
- I’ve also heard about the Stanford Shopping Center but I thought that would be too expensive so I never went.

So any feedback on those malls / stores or suggestion of other places and stores where I could find good deals would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

Shoes -- It would be worth a trip to DSW which is near west valley mall, they have everything and the discounts range from 10% and up.  Most are 30% or so off.

Kids -- Old Navy and Macy's (sales) have good kids clothes, also.  Carters is great for all those ages as well and their pricing depends on the current sale/timing. Carters should be CHEAP, I would not pay full price there.

Mall Advice -- We primarily shop at Stanford shopping center out of convenience and its not ALL super high end but its not a budget destination.  they have a nice Macy's, Gap, Banana etc but nothing you wouldn't see at another mall. Their specialty is the high end stores Nieman Marcus, Bloomies, etc.

I think Nordstrom might be having their half yearly sale for womens and kids in May. Also check out the store's website before going to get an idea of the sale prices and what's available before driving over there. I really only shop at Stanford Shopping Center when there's a sale going on so it's not too bad.

Ah, merci !

Express aaaallllwaaayyyssss has sales. ALWAYS. I never buy anything full price there.

Old Navy and Target are good for children's clothes, as are stores like Nordstrom Rack if you want something a bit more stylish/trendy... even for yourself!

I second the vote for DSW for shoes. I have found good things there, including Born, Ecco, Merrils, and Clarks for ~50% less than normal.

For underwear, I have had good luck with Aerie recently. I happened to wander in with a friend who needed something, and their bras were on sale for 20$ each. Appear to be very similar to those from Victoria Secret in terms of colors, shape, and supportiveness. Then I stumbled across another (online) sale were underwear was 10 for 35$, so I stocked up. So perhaps check to see if there is a sale?

I'd go to the Outlets at Gilroy long before I'd go to Napa or Petaluma, which are much smaller and further away, both in time in traffic and distance. I have also had good luck at Marina Square Shopping Center in across the bridge in San Leandro, which has a Nordstrom Rack and a Nike Outlet, to name a few. I haven't been there since FIRE,  but checking the reviews on Yelp should tell you enough to make a good decision.

If you drive up to San Leandro, there are outlet stores for Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, Gap, Banana Republic, etc.

If you're looking for a more mustachian approach the Goodwill stores in both Mountain View and Sunnyvale are pretty nice. There's also a Plato's Closet in San Mateo which has new / gently used items for really good prices.
