Any Feds retire before MRA?
« on: October 18, 2020, 08:03:17 AM »
Just curious if any Feds retire before MRA?  At 57 (my MRA) I have 29 years in, so my plan was to stay until 58 (about 18 more years) and if I'm still enjoying it then maybe stay until 62 (only if I'm enjoying it though).  Our youngest will be college age in 10 years when I'm 50, at which case we would probably be FIRE.  DW could probably FIRE at that point and I keep working if it's tolerable.  I enjoy my job a lot, I have creativity to solve complex problems which is fun, but with a new boss it's become a lot less enjoyable lately, much more about the documentation, process and paperwork.  It is still enjoyable though and she lets me do my thing for the most part, but I can see it getting more irritating as time goes on.  Just curious how many Feds do actually retire early, before MRA?

You have a long time ahead of you.  A million things can happen between now and then.  If you decide you don't like your job you can always go with another agency.  Right now, save save save.  Add to your TSP and Roth and anything else.  If your MRA is at least 17 years away, you could retire long befor then.  There's no way to know how today's retirment rules will affect you.  The health insurance situation for ex, might be totally different.  Just build a stash so you have options.
