Title: free fireplace glass
Post by: affordablehousing on January 16, 2020, 04:18:12 PM
Hi gang, niche question, has anyone ever tried to replace the glass doors on their fireplace insert? I have wanted to replace the steel door inserts on an old buck stove with heat-resistant ceramic glass. I had luck recycling the glass from a stove door cutting it on a tile saw to make one panel but I need a second one. Subsequent efforts on stove door glass seems to reveal it is all tempered and shatters on the saw. Did I get lucky on my one successful cut? Do certain stoves combine a ceramic glass inner lite with a tempered outer lite? I love these sorts of hacks and was hoping someone knew more than I. To get a tiny half square foot piece cut at a glass shop seems to run around $100 and would love to beat that by scrounging.

I've never cut tempered glass with a saw before.
Are you taping the cut line?
Have you tried the method of scratching a line and then snapping, like with tile cutter?

I replaced one with the advice of a glass replacement shop.  I would go talk to a glazer.
