found ipad
« on: January 25, 2022, 01:50:31 PM »
I was excited the other day to find an ipad mini 4 in a free pile outside of an apartment building. I fired it up and was disappointed to see that while it was wiped and had the sim removed, it was still activation locked. The building had too many apartments to try figuring out whose it was. Is there any point to this? Any creative reuses for it like using the screen as a tiny window for a door. Right now we are using it as an "electric dance floor" for dolls.

My kid just cracked the screen on his mini 2. Wonder if they are compatible?

I think we're going to use the anodized back as the cover for an oversized doorbell.

Is there no way of doing a complete factory reset to remove the password?

You should be able to factory reset it by setting up iTunes, plugging it in and activating recovery mode.  Google "factory reset ipad 4 recovery mode" and you'll find step by step instructions.

This only works if Find My iPad is not enabled. If it’s enabled and assigned to an AppleID, it’s impossible to reset AFAIK.

I did factory reset at Best Buy geek squad but it was my iPad. The iTunes rested did not work for me but likely because I did not have another device that was compatible enough.

Since it was in a “free” box outside your apartment building, why not put a note up saying something like “thanks for the donated iPad… but it’s locked!  I’ll trade you this $10 gift card for the passcode!” - and leave a way to contact you.

Non-intrusive and you’re likely to get a response. If not you are no worse off.
