Pennsylvania vs. Massachusetts for expat tax purposes?
« on: January 01, 2016, 07:55:45 PM »
It looks like I'll be relocating overseas long-term (maybe permanently) in about 3 weeks for a new job, barring unforeseen complications.

Currently I'm either a Massachusetts resident or a Pennsylvania resident, depending on how you look at it, and it seems how I look at it for the next 3 weeks will determine where I need to file taxes long term. The expat tax advice websites I've seen so far don't list either of these states as particularly friendly or unfriendly to expats, but is there a major difference? My life has been in Massachusetts for the past 5 years, but my lease there ended yesterday. My parents in Pennsylvania are letting me extend my winter holiday here for a little while to sort out my things, and my mail will be coming here temporarily until I have a new permanent address. I'll also be spending time in Massachusetts to sort out things there and wrap up that chapter of my life. I'm wondering whether it makes sense to officially change over my Mass. driver's license and voter registration to Pennsylvania.
