As a fairly regular business class flyer (pleasure and work), both domestically (US) and internationally (all continents bar Antarctica) here are my simple thoughts;

  • The ROI will never justify itself vs paying Economy/Opportunity Cost so don’t do mental gymnastics. Sure with mistake fares, large credit card bonus point offers covering fare, points upgrades, other deals if forced to buy very late, etc. you can come out ahead/neutral, but that is exception. So unless someone else is paying like work, it will almost always cost you a lot more.
  • As others said varies wildly with US Domestic vs US International vs Foreign International airlines. So a like for like Class Name and Fare Amount could mean wildly different experiences. Especially when you factor in other amenities like airport lounges, perks with check-in and boarding and quick lines at destination, priority bags, no jet lag at destination bc you slept so you can maximize time etc.
  • Ultimately depends on what matters to you in life. I love travel, I love the travel experience, I love planes, I love maximizing time at destinations, and as I have gotten older, I value creature comforts, easy sleep on planes, great service, great food/drinks, etc. I don’t value cars, have not owned one since 2006, and when rent always get the compact with best fuel economy.

Final thought if you do, especially if one off, in general the Asian/Middle Eastern carriers have the best overall product and service. Then sign up for the frequent flyer program of the US carrier connected that airline as likely you will end up with enough points for a free domestic trip in future.

Safe travels!!
