Where to start looking? Recent MIS grad (calling anyone in IT)

I graduated from ECU (NC) last May with a degree in Management Information Systems. I didn't immediately pursue work in a related field because I was still living at home and had a decent paying job. All coursework was completed online.

I quit my job a few months ago and am getting the itch to start my IT career, specifically in software. I only have basic experience that I was exposed to during my time at school involving a few VB projects, and some web development and SQL. Beyond that, I'm clueless. I'm searching the Raleigh, Austin, and Seattle areas because that's where I'd like to live, but would be open other cities.

I'm pinpointing entry level Software, QA, or even Help Desk positions. Am I on the right track? Are there other non-obvious positions I should look out for? Something to get my foot in the door?

With MIS also look at reporting analyst and data analyst. Job market, at least in Arizona is pretty good, but getting experience is always hard when just starting out. Look for smaller companies or places specifically looking for entry level jobs.

I live in a very small town. I did try that route and agree it would be a great start - but I had no success since the openings were not entry level and at my interview they all acknowledged that I needed experience.

You never know, when working for the local government I know they hired a former A/C repairman and an old dude who used the "hunt and peck" method of typing to do software development. Try the nearest big city. Local gov't pay is really shitty for the tech sector, so its hard to find professionals willing to do the job.
