firewall-update-failed, Legitimate or Scam?
« on: March 21, 2017, 11:14:48 AM »
Was just reading the Daily Mail online, (I know, I know--shocking tabloid...but entertaining), when I got a series of pop-up windows purportedly from Apple saying there were attempts being made to breach my security, get my banking details...and I should call a toll-free number.

I just shut down the window I was looking at and came directly to the Forum to ask about this.

I have a MacBook Air 11" circa 2012.

Almost certainly spam. Google the toll free number (if you still have it) and see what comes up.

When I googled the toll-free number, it was indeed a well-known scam phone number. Thanks for the heads up--I certainly didn't intend to call the number, but would not have thought of googling it.

What's wrong with Daily Mail? My fave news source, for real.

Sometimes they have better news articles than the more mainline newspapers, and I like to read the occasional stories about British history--old houses and such, or when they publish historic photos. And their science section has interesting stories--usually more dramatic-sounding than the mainline newspapers or journals. But I skip over the icky or disgusting-sleazy articles, like "Man Pops Ten-Centimeter Pimple" or "I Married My Grandfather and Our Child is My Mother...from Outer Space."

FYI ... I got a similar message supposedly from Microsoft.  So, watch out everybody!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
