FIREing after extended leave of absence - Ontario
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:52:28 PM »
I am in Ontario and have worked for a small not for profit for 8 years now. I have been off on an extended leave of absence for 9 months (since January) and am due back at work on Dec 3. This has been a job protected leand to be a caregiver for my husband who has been battling cancer. We are now ready for me to FIRE (especially since he continues to have issues).

Any suggestions on how best to approach this? Any chance of anything like a severance package? Anything I need to know that would be of benefit to me from a labor law perspective? I had a meeting with my bosses this afternoon and I let them know I was considering not returning. They did tell me my vacation does not accrue while I am off (which seems contradictory to what I read). That said, our VP told me honestly that they don't have a trained HR professional so she recommended I seek advice.

I plan to leave on a good note but also want to try not to leave anything on the table. I also plan to not completely cut off ties and leave the possibility of contract work.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
