Finding coin
« on: July 09, 2021, 10:24:59 PM »
I had a happy accident the other day and while walking the dog saw a jar of pennies with a load of old stuff for bulk pickup. Not sure why I stopped to look but it turns out the jar was full of Indian head pennies and pre-1965 dimes (90% silver). I know these are very low grade coins for a collector but any ideas on how to best turn these into beer money? Ebay? Craigslist? Local coin store? I'm not an expert at all but do doubt there are any super rare ones in the jar.

go to a trusted coin store.

How does a total noob know which stores to trust? I have some coins, including a gold one, that were my grandmother's. How do I figure out who can be trusted to evaluate them?

Sell the pre 1982.5 pennies by weight on eBay, you can send these in a USPS small flat rate priority mail box, you can typically get $3-ish per pound.  Separate out the Indian head ones and sell them by the roll on eBay.  Sell the 90% silver coinage by face value on eBay.  There is a FV multiplier that people will use to figure out the total silver content and value.

You will actually get much better profits selling on eBay vs. a local coin shop in my experience.

Thanks all. I appreciate the suggestions. I counted and there were 355 indian head ones. A local coin shop that seemed to be legit offered 25 cents a penny, but I'll try Ebay and see how I do. From past auctions it seems like it might be worth the extra time.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
