Finding a Mustachian apartment in NYC
« on: May 30, 2014, 12:11:57 PM »
I'm graduating from college this year and after an extensive job search, I have accepted a position located in New York City's midtown area. While I am very excited about the job, I am having a very difficult time finding a reasonable apartment. Craigslist is often overpriced and filled with scams, but other websites I've found lack high volume of listings.

Has anyone here dealt with a similar problem?

Thank you for your help!

"Split costs with an apartment mate" and/or "live in a less expensive borough" are two common tactics.

NYC has awesome public transportation- there's no need to live in the neighborhood you work in.

Given you will be working in Midtown, check out apartments in Queens. You'll likely be able to get rents below $1,000 if you have a roommate.

Thanks for the replies. I'm certainly planning on living with multiple roommates outside of midtown--areas I'm looking at are in Queens, Harlem, and Brooklyn. I was mostly asking about websites or listing areas that you might have found useful.

Hey nycstubble!

We found ours on Craigslist, but had some promising leads from http://www.nybits.com/.  It's poorly formatted, but has more robust content than most.

I also work in mid-town and we live in Wash Heights/Inwood - only a 30 minute commute on the express trains, and I always get a seat going into town in the morning since we're one of the first stops on the line.  May want to add it to your list of potential neighborhoods.

Good luck!

Thank you erae, that looks great--the neighborhood suggestion and website you sent are just what I was looking for. It's mystifying that I haven't found any websites that have a sort by rent/room function.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
