Possible Move.
« on: September 13, 2015, 03:24:12 PM »
Hey guys, just trying to get some opinions here for a situation that may present itself by years end. I  may very soon have the option to take a job in a new city a little under 4 hours away from where I currently live.  Here are the main details.  The job would be a raise of almost 40% of my current income and a car/gas to drive for work(job is with the same company).  I currently own a home and selling it is not an option, it has been in my family for several generations and I have completely remolded it, I am also not crazy about the idea of renting it.  I have a very modest mortgage and the payment is under $400 a month.  Also, this is where I plan to move back to, hopefully sooner than later.  I have done research on the area where the new job is located and renting there seems to rage from a low end around $700 to a high end of $1500 or more. There would be no additional cost, the new city doesn't have a higher cost of living and is actually very walkable, where I live now walking is not an option.  While the rent would likely take the majority of the pay increase, the opportunity for advancement there is much greater and staying put there is almost no chance of moving up for at least 10 years in the current position. For example after 1 year with the new position I would get a $5000 raise automatically.     I guess I just want to hear what you all see good or bad in this situation.  Thanks for any insight.

Do you have any friends or family you could rent a room to, so someone could keep an eye on your house?

I'm moving from Phoenix to NJ in two weeks for a job, but I have two reliable people in my house now (a good friend and a family member). I want to be back in Phoenix in a year or two and I love my house, so I don't want to sell. It's costing me a bit to keep it (I'm not raising rent for them, despite they'll have the house to themselves) but it's worth it to me.

If you were to look for jobs with other companies in your current city, what would your prospects be?

I actually have family that are my next door neighbors, so I don't have any worries about having someone keep an eye on the place, but no one I could really rent to.  The only reason I am considering the move is the area I live there are very few options for anyone.  I know people will say you haven't looked hard enough when they hear that, but its just the truth.  Retail, restaurants and some factories.  I currently have a government job with really great retirement and benefits which I would hate to give up. But, like you I plan to be back to my home in a few years or sooner. But, without this promotion I will pretty much be stuck.

I grew up in the middle of nowhere - I sympathize with the 'nothing around' aspect!  It looks like you'd be best off to go, but would you eventually return to your current job location with a different position, or would you move back once you're FI?

When I was making my decision, I made a spreadsheet listing all additional expenses that would be incurred by my move and plotted out how much money I would have to earn in order to break even, then how much extra I would need for it to be worth it to me. That may be useful for you as well, but as nobody likes to be 'stuck' I think you will probably decide to go (as I likely would as well). :)
