Filing for Divorce from overseas
« on: August 31, 2018, 10:50:48 AM »
I need to file for a divorce and I'm looking for advice on the best way to go about it. I live abroad and he lives in the US. We have no children and we already sold the house (the only asset), paid off the debts and split the profits. Neither of us want spousal support. At this point it's simply a matter of paperwork.

What's the easiest way to do this? My preference is not to return to the US unless that is the cheapest option. There is a US embassy where I live so they could notarize the documents. Do I need a lawyer even though it's an uncontested divorce?

Look up the divorce requirements for the US state in which you were married or last domiciled.  File paperwork.

I would say the US state that he currently lives in.

In some states, you can have him do everything. If you are served notice and don't respond, the divorce will still be granted and you can get a certified copy of the decree.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
