FERS Pension - do Federal court clerkships count?
« on: March 27, 2019, 09:18:20 AM »
Longshot but in case anyone is current/former government under the FERS pension system— any idea if a 12 month federal district clerkship (done in 2007-08) counts as “creditable service” for FERS purposes. I assume the answer is no but just wanted to verify (and will obviously confirm with HR but can’t chase down the right person). Currently at a govt job I HATE. It’s been 4 years and I’m ready to walk even if it means losing the pension (though I do get back out the 4.4% I’ve been putting in per pay period) - so wondering if I’d totally be walking away or if there’s any chance that 12 months of clerking pushes me into 5 year vesting.

Take a look at your latest SF-50, in block 31 there should be your Service Computation Date (SCD) and that should tell you what they calculate your start date at and it should give you an idea of how many years of creditable service you have.  Or have a chat with your HR person.

Clerkships, according to my coworker who did 3 year fed clerkship, does not count towards FERS. You can also look on employee express, under misc click employee benefit statement. There’s a section that says “if I resigned today” and you can see if you’re eligible for deferred retirement (aka if your vested).
